Ok guys. This has been covered on various forums but so far no resolution has been found and/or posted. There have been various reports of the ZHP motor having a distinct rattle coming from the front of the motor. This starts at 2k and continues into 3k or so. After that it is hard to discern due to the higher rpm.

I got a PM back from a board member, Iniquity I believe, that said his car was left at the dealer for a month for the same problem. BMW engineers etc supposedly got involved and the best they could come up with is that it is "norma". Huh! The noise is terrible. It is so bad it turns heads in the parking lots. I can't even imagine trying to sell the car like this.

The VANOS was replaced in my ZHP, but that did not solve the problem.

Anyone have any insight on this?

I just found this resolution posted on this board by TxZHP. Mechanics notes:

"Verified noise and can feel in front of valve cover at 2k rpm. Removed valve cover and inspected for wear or damage to valve train. None visible. Replaced double VANOS adjusting unit and reassembled engine. Noise still there. Contacted technical via PUMA case. Suggested to perform VANOS activate and see if in valve train. While testing heard noise. Dissassembled again. Removed VANOS adjuster, removed cams and inspected for wear. Found cam gear sprocket with splines and worm gear to excessive lash. Also found timing chain to have wear on inside of chain teeth, and chain tensioner is worn and not applying pressure to chain. Replaced VANOS chain and tensioner, replaced both intake and exhaust VANOS worm gears and splined sprockets. Reinstalled original double VANOS unit and reassembled cams and engine. Tested after repairs. No abnormal noise heard."

Anything new on this or is the case closed?
