quick barney-style dsc explanation (dynamic stability control):

DSC basically compares where you're going (measured with a little gyroscope) to where you want to go (measured with a sensor that sees where the steering wheel is pointed), and activates the one or more of the brakes to fix the problem. It can also cut power to the engine to prevent you from losing all traction.

Example: you take a right turn too fast and the back wheels start to slide out (oversteer). Solution: DSC cuts back on the power (duh!) and activates the right rear brake. The brake causes more drag on that wheel, causing the car to turn back in the direction you want to go.

Disclaimer: that's basically right, but may be a little off. What did you expect from a big purple dinosaur?

What year is the car? How much did you pay for it? and how many miles on the car?

whoops... sorry for the very slow reply....

Nope, don't know of any meets here in nc, but I haven't really looked, either. Eventually I'll check into that track in greensboro (famous name, I forget it!) and see if they have autocross events or an associated "bmw day", but I haven't gotten around to it.

Man, you should have bought Tod's car better. Did the supercharger played a role in your decision to buy this car? Did you do any research about the ESS SC before you bought it?

so going back to your original post, sounds like classic 4wd launch bog. you rev the motor to a level that would normally light up the back wheels (or in the case of ours,...one wheel :( ) then you dump the clutch. only to find out with the extra traction the front tires afford, the motor doesn't have enough torque to get the wheels rotating fast enough.

when you're revs dropped, did the little yellow symbol come on? if so, the dsc kicked in and cut the power. otherwise, you bogged the motor.

more clutch slipping. man, witht he sc, you sure are going to abuse your clutch. enjoy!!!!

the key to a successful awd launch is to keep your revs up and slip your clutch just enough to not bog your motor. it is a fine art. that's why you can typically beat most joe-shmoes with awd cars in the dry pavement.

so you're saying the dsc interferes with your driving. do you guys like that? is there a way to turn it off and would you recommend it?
