View Full Version : 18" Spinners

Has anyone put 18" spinners on their BMW?
What do you think about the idea?

$1500 add-on to existing rims, or $900/wheel for the whole thing (http://www.truckxpressions.com/accessorygateways/spinning_rim.htm) They are kindof neat looking, but this is such a fad ... in 2 years, I'm sure it'll be completely over. $4k will make a good dent towards a supercharger.

Of course, different tastes for different people -- that's just my opinion. I also think every car can be enhanced by the timeless beauty of a plastic scrotum hanging underneath the bumper... surprising as it may seem, some people might not agree with me. ;)

ps ghetto- I like your current wheels - they're kinda like the sport package wheels turned inside-out!

My brother, possibly gettin a new Ci, wants to buy my current rims. And I want a new look.

It doesnt get cooler than spinners, but they're so expensive. This kit that adds spinners to regular rims...is it complicated?
How can I get a good deal on spinners?
and any more comments on spinners?

oh and can 20" rims fit on a e46 sedan?

Give the man a brake - that is his taste - can't argue with that.

I've never heard of 20 on an E46.

I believe the total wheel diameter to be around 25'
So you would have about 2.5' of tire sidewall

I did not see a tire (in my vast tire research) that would preserve this diameter and would match a 20' rim

I don't deny I don't like what he's doing to that vehicle.
But that is my taste.
If the guy has a ghetto culture it's not because of him but mostly because where he grew up - that is not his fault.
Where we get to grow up is not our choice. It's just life.

we have plenty of choices in this society...
we can choose to leave the ghetto...or in jimmy carter's case, the peanut farm
(I am NOT a jimmy carter fan, but he grew up growing peanuts, then ended up the President of the United States....)

If you own your car, you can do whatever hell you want with it. Be prepared to hear people make comments about your car as well- good and/or bad.

alright, all of a sudden i'm the bad guy...
but remember about a year ago? i think someone posted a pic of an E36, i beileve it was green. the pic was from behind, and it had some horrible, just truly horrible thing done to it. some sort of ghetto aftermarket tail lights, and EVERYONE on this sight went off on that guy, just cuz we didn't know who he was....
so are you really saying that if THAT guy became a member, then you wouldn't be critical? there are just some things, i'm sure RR will agree with me, that do not belong on certain other things. spinners on an e46, hub caps on a ferrari, great rack on a 12 year old...
damn, i wish i could find that post...does anyone remember?

We have comedians on the Forum?

Im not "ghetto" at all, its just a Forum Name and you dont need to ask why. I would consider myself as the opposite of ghetto. I just had the thought of spinners on my 330i, becasue I have a friend with a black esclade on 22" spinners and was the talk of the party, all good comments.

My friend wants to get 18" spinners on his VW GTI. I dont think spinners should be known as "ghetto". I just never would of thought that spinners could be a negative torwards your car.

Where I live, nothing is ghetto. In a small, wealthy town (home to Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, and more) like mine, you dont see spinners. Just expensive cars, and oem rims. Everyone drives a BMW here... even the nanny, the pool man, and the security guards that sit outside Bruce's and Jon's house.

The thing with me, I want my car to be different, but a good different. If I drive in-town and someone sees a BMW drive by, I want them to know if its mine or not. I dont want a bright yellow paintjob, stupid decals, or testicles on the bumper. All I have is a 330i, and the thought of spinners just crossed my mine and wanted some feedback.
Please continue with your comments. Thanx

btw, who cares if someone wants to spend money and buys spinners...who cares if someone wants to save money on hubcaps...who cares if a 12yr old has a great rack, id say 'good for her'

I had a peek at the web site morcheeba listed. I don't think any of the rims there would look good on e46. It's all for trucks or SUV's.

I don't like spinners. my plain opinion.
but I also think 19" rims are a bit much on an e46.
and I'm not a big fan of bling bling...
I love customization... but not in a gaudy showy way.

Ghetto, I think you need to talk to vancouver.

I don't think bmw's are asking anyone to stare at them,
just not that kind of brand. Maybe you should be driving
a Mini Cooper S... you'll get more stares in that.

david
08-03-2003, 05:07 PM
do you like them to stare and say "what the fuck is he doing to that nice car?"

in either case, about you not living in a ghetto...beverly hills has a ghetto so don't pretend your better than ghetto life. if you do something to your car that would be more in tune with a p-diddy/snoop-dog video, rather than car and drive/road and track magazine, it's ghetto. i don't care if it's millionaire ghetto, it's ghetto nonetheless...

here's a new idea, i think puff diddy doggy should put 55 inch chrome rims and neon spinners on his Jet...

I was standing on the corner the other day when a Mercedes S500 drove by with chrome spinners. Silliest thing I ever saw. The driver was a teenaged girl, dripping with 'tude.

People were literally pointing at that car and laughing.

Wanting your car to stand out in a crowd is one thing. Turning it into a rolling joke is another.

:nono: To each his own, but spending that much money on something that doesn't help the way the car runs or drives seems wasteful to me. In this case, for every person who thinks spinners look kewl you'll find half-a-dozen that think they only belong on ricers and clownmobiles.

Well, I guess it's all about age then. I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say that I'm the youngest member aboard... which is probably the only reason you guys might "bash" or disagree upon this topic.

Frown all you want, the fact of the matter is that despite the number of people that hate them (like you old timers), there a bunch of people on the other side that like them (hence the reason they have become more popular since they have been released and are still in business).

SKid, "to each his own"... and I agree. The rims I have on now cost me around $2,500.00. (would have put a nice dent on my way to a supercharger) But some of you like those.... and I spent that much money and that does NOT help my car drive or run better. So what's your point? :nono: I have people telling me that my clear corners are joke. IMO, I think some body kits are a waste. Does that help you drive or run better?

So tell me Skid, what can I do to stand out in a crowd?

do you like them to stare and say "what the fuck is he doing to that nice car?"

in either case, about you not living in a ghetto...beverly hills has a ghetto so don't pretend your better than ghetto life. if you do something to your car that would be more in tune with a p-diddy/snoop-dog video, rather than car and drive/road and track magazine, it's ghetto. i don't care if it's millionaire ghetto, it's ghetto nonetheless...

What does me not living in a ghetto have to do with Beverly Hills? I can admit that I'm lucky to live a wealthy lifestyle, not worrying when the next plate will be on the table... but dont ever judge me if you don't know me.

I subscribe to Motor Trend (its not car and drive/road and track magazine, but I think I'm pretty close) ... and all I've seen are reviews and tests of stock bimmers and maybe the occasional M-series. So your saying that if I'm not stock, I'm ghetto huh? Good one...

david
08-03-2003, 07:23 PM
you must be young because your counterarugments make no sense and hold no water.

and when you make a remark like "i must be the youngest one in here", common sense would tell you to say how old you are, so that we can actually see if your hypotheses holds true. (probably not). I just turned 24, and I know many of the people on this site are in their 20's as well. (not much older than 16 which you have to be to even drive in most states).

also, you actually found the time to quote me and not read what i wrote? if you go back and read, you'll see that i said "more in tune with" when referring to pdiddy or the magazines. you're right, most of the mags are stock, but on those occasions when they do show aesthetic mods, i'm sure you'll still be more likely to find spinners on jarule's escalade.

about those clear corners that some people say is a joke...those come stock on some models like the 3series CI with sport package, and are the norm in the european models.

ghetto, speaking lingo and lifestyle wise, doesn't have to mean poor. but i'll placate you and accept that you don't live in a "ghetto", but by your screenname, your attitude, and your tastes, you're at the very least bling bling (or are you too rich to be called that too?).

i think you like it, to tell you the truth, i think you like pretending being ghetto. but the moment someone actually called you on it, you got defensive. it's ok, all of us do it when we're young. i remember a stage when i actually sagged my pants.

anyhow, get the spinners, and then get some hydraulics to push the front end up and down at stop lights, now THAT will make you different!

I didnt realize that I had to reveal my age on this forum. Well, for your information David, I am 17.

It was my mistake upon not comprehending what I quoted. I understand now and your correct about more likely to find spinners on jarule's escalade.

My screename, attitude, and taste? Again, please dont judge me on a couple of posts and a simple screenname. Dave, i've read somewhere that a person who uses their true name, and only that, as their screenname lacks attention while growing up and seeks to be noticed (i'll find the source later). But I'm not going to judge you... got better things to do. Again, telling me that I like to pretend I'm ghetto is none of your business. That is like me telling you that your a nerd becuase your occupation is computers.

Call me ghetto if you like... I didnt choose the screename for nothing. If I were to get defensive everytime someone called me ghetto (trust me, I get it alot), dont you think I would have changed it by now?

Well my time is up. I have plenty more to say and maybe later I'll edit and add... but for now I'll leave it at this.

David I agree with you, but nothing you say will change Ghetto2315's mind. I remember when I was 16 I installed gold wired wheels on my BMW. (I think this was much worse than the spinners.) I feel pretty embarrased when I think about it now. I can't believe what was I thinking? Back then I thought I was the coolest guy on the block. Noone could change my mind. Sometimes you just have to grow out of it.

To grow out of things doesnt mean you have to be young to start with. You guys in your 20's or older are sure to grow out of many things to come in the future... you can bet on that.

As for the spinners... no guarantees yet. If infact I do, I'll post some pics (although it would be kind of hard to catch them in motion).

When I was 17(1987), I had a 1981 grey market VW Jetta Coupe.
It had a Callaway Turbo, fully modified suspension, Zender body kit, Recaro interior. Was the car different, hell yes. Not another one like it. Yes the body kit helped areodynamically. Did people stare? Not unless I was ripping up the street on campus. But it did get attention from people who knew about cars.
Darius, if you had BBS gold rims on your car I bet it would have
been very cool.
1984, my dad bought a new 533i, took off the rims and suspension,
interior gutted and the car went to NC to Korman Autoworks.
Turbo charged w/ full recaro C interior, the car rocked and was very euro. Black w/ recaro rainbow interior. 16" gold rims and lowered about 1-1.5" from suspension. The only odd thing about the car... he had the dual ovals on the grill painted to match the rims.
Ghetto, I don't think spinners will get the attention.
You need a carbon hood & mirrors, carbon WING and coke bottle exhaust.
You are better off saving your $ for an M3.

In case you've forgotten, Ghetto, this thread began because you asked us what we think. Then you got defensive when we told you.

When you ask people who really love and respect BMWs for opinions, most will tell you less is more and something as gaudy as spinners detracts from the classic eurosports look most of us bought our cars for. That certainly seems to be the majority opinion here.

It's your car and your money, do what makes you happy. But don't expect the people in this forum to agree with your choices.

It's not an age thing, it's a taste thing. Yours is different from mine. I can respect that. But you asked me what I think, and I told you.

No harm, no foul.

ok, here's a white-boy yuppie translation:

bling bling - dictionary (http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_765279.html?menu=news.quirkies) - shiny fancy pimp-like stuff that reeks of money.

spinners - they look like normal wheels, but they are actually made in two parts. The inside part operates like a normal wheel, connecting the rotor to the rubber - this is kind of hidden. The outside part is designed to look like the real wheel, and is connected to the rest by a bearing that can freely spin. There is a mechanism that makes the outside spin, even when you're stopped. Also, due to the way it works, when you start from a stoplight, the outside moves slowly. Check out the link in my first response for some pictures (but an mpeg would be much better). Usually this outer part is all chromed up since that just makes this all the more bling bling.

david
08-26-2003, 11:46 PM
it definately is a double standard. true, white people used the term in a derogatory sense years ago during slave ownership, but if that same group of people, who are trying to "fight oppression" and "fight for equality" uses the term now and says it's not ok for another group to use it, it is descrimination. it doesn't only go one way you know.

this world has gotten way too PC for my taste. seriously i don't care what the word means or who wants to use it. i think everyone should be able to say what they want. especially if it's socially accepted to do so among one group, but not another. that's like me being jewish, which i am, and calling my other jewish friends dirty cheap money hungry big nose jews, and getting pissed if a christian or anyone else says it. if i don't want the term to be used, i shouldn't use it myself. plane and simple. and what about that white teacher who got FIRED for using the word niggardly? it's a very legitamate word, and has NOTHING to do with the N word. just because it SOUNDS like a bad word we have to stop using it? fuck that. politically correctness has gotten way too out of control.

let me share one last thing...when i was in college, i had a job as an RA (resident assistant). i was in a dining hall eating lunch when my friend walked in (an old roommate) and i yelled his name "DIKAN!". I subsequently got fired because there were two lesbians who said i was insensitive to their sexuality. INSENSITIVE? IT'S THE FUCKING KINDS NAME. MIKE DIKAN! after months of hearings, and ResLife trying to get me kicked out of school, i stould my ground, the ACLU (who very often fights for gay/lesbian rights) came and was on MY side, threatening the university with law suits and negative publicity because MY rights were being violated. i quickly got offered my job back, which i declined, and then was offered the rest of my years at school with free room and board, which i gladly took. anyway, the point is, speach shoudln't be censored. ESPECIALLY if it's speach like niggardly, or dikan, or nigga since many of the "offended" people use it themselves". what kind of society are we becoming if we only reserver certain words for certain groups of people?

and off topic but related, what kind of society are we when we have a group of people who actually HATE when one of their own gets educated, and holds a prominant rank in society. why is it that Colin Powell is reffered to in the black community as "too white"? what the fuck is that? god for bid white people said eminem was "too black". are you kidding me? this is not to down anybody, and i'm not "white" myself. i respectfully have to check "other" in every one of those fucking checkboxes...but let's wake up people. if we are striving towards equality, this is NOT the way to do it.

ok, i'm over it now....had to get that out, good ngiht.
