I hadn't had any problems with the auto tranny until about two weeks ago. I was driving on the freeway to Arizona when I missed my interchange so I slow down for the next exit and simultaneously push the shifter forward three times to get to 2nd then as I'm getting close to the red light I push forward again to get to first. When the light changes I take off and it takes off slower than ever like it's in 3rd or 4th, which should never happen because the tranny will automatically go down to at least second even if you do nothing. So I look at the dash and it shows a funny circle with an exclamation and a 4 next to it where there is normally an M 4 if it was in 4th manual mode. Well, I manage to pull in to a shopping center and put it in park and shut off the car, wait a minute, start it back up and everything looks normal. The next 400 miles to my destination were uneventful. In the last week I've noticed driving around the city that sometimes I'll be in 5th and attempt to downshift to 3rd and it goes into 3rd then switches to 4th by itself and then I can't control the gears until I go back to auto mode then back again to sport mode. Also, going from 3rd to 2nd now is sometimes a rough jerk, whereas before it was always smooth.
Any idea what might be happening? I've had my car since April 2002 and it has 17,000 miles. Also, I almost always use the manual mode.
