Recently I have learnt that SMG (not SMG II as on the M3's) is being made available to the 325 and 330). Since I have to go through trafiic jams both before and after work a full manual may be a bit hard to live with.

I have had 4 bmw' so far, 2 E36's and 2 E46's
Steptronic while being great in auto mode is somewhat slow for even light track use.

My question for anyone who has any any knowledge on this is how good a compromise is the SMG.

Is it reliable, can i run a supercharger on say a 325 or 330 i.e. approx 100hp more then stock without the gearbox going pop?

I can't speak to the reliability but I can attest to the fun factor experienced with the SMG transmission. I recently test drove an M3 with the transmission and was pleasantly surprised. That's saying a lot considering I've only owned manuals. I liked the experience so much, I went ahead and ordered an M3 with the SMG transmission!!

According to the dealers in SA, SSG (SMG I) is being offered on the 330s and SMG II on M3s.
