Question about the site?

Hey, this may be a stupid question.. but I've always wondered how to do this. I was looking at your site, and I noticed that the pictures seem to be "merged" in with the background.

So I saved one of the header graphics (for example, nav_footer.gif on the main page) and I noticed the background to the actual picture was white, yet it appeared to have the boxes from the webpage background on it.
(look at the picture yourself if you don't get what I'm asking).

Is there a trick I'm just missing? I'd appreciate your help.

A lot of my graphic use a transparent background. I use .GIF files to take advantage of this, although they are limited to 256 colors.

Most graphic programs can assign a color to be the transparent layer.
