I'm interested in adding the universal transceiver (homelink system) to my 330i. I can buy the parts for about $175 from the dealer, but was curious if anyone else has done this. Do you need to cut the hole where it fits, or do you get a new panel for the ceiling, or what? Any help or info is appreciated.

I believe you get a new face panel, but there is some kind of knockout you have to cut through behind the liner. I could be wrong...

Go to this site http://www.bmwnation.com/home.html and look over to the right side of the page where it says tech/do it yourself. They have a DIY for the universal transceiver.

Thanks! This saves me about $200. Now if I just don't cut too far with that exacto.....

Install was a breeze, just need to take your time with the exacto knife. Next up, the alarm system.

I did the alarm system last weekend & it was fairly easy. There is a component to install in the trunk (easy), overhead (also easy), and engine compartment. Getting that last one in requires removing some stuff in the eng. compartment - just go slow and try & keep track of how things fit together as you remove them. Shouldn't take more than 90 mins start to finish. Oh - have a 30 Torx bit ready (most small toolkits only have 10-15-20 bits...). And, it'll have to be "enabled" by a dealer when you're done - abt $50.
