Illegal to modify with aftermarket in Germany?

I spoke with a young lad who moved to CA from Bavaria, Germany. He told me that modifying your car's engine with aftermarket performance parts is illegal in Germany. Apparently, your car gets tested yearly and any kind of mod is against the law! I was surprised to hear this since I've always thought Germans would be fanatics in modifying their cars' engines. Thought you guys might be interested to know this. No wonder German car makes such as BMW and Porsche roll out high performing engines already.

That doesn't make sense with all the German tuner companies out there. I've also seen totally fixed up BMWs that are registered in germany.

A lot of enthusiasts still modify their cars. They probably just uninstall at time of check ups then reinstall again.

hey,
i study in ca right now, and i am from germany, that yearly check thing is not true. There is a check you have to have done on your car, and every modification needs to be registered and checked by the same peoole (tüv). it is quite expensive to register that. By the way, gas is ridicules expensive over there we pay ca. 1.20 euros per liter (not exact, havnt been in germany for a while) that means about 4 euros per gallon which is about $3.70.

Thanks Phillip for the clarification. Is it worth paying the fees to register the modifications? It seems you need to make lots of money if you choose to mod your car.

there are modified cars, but i dont really know how expensive it is to get that registered, definetely more then here, since it is free here !!

well also, im sure alot of the tuning companies cater to people looking to build cars just for racing purpose, and not for the street
