supercharged

Hi all,
Finally I got it supercharged, with all the little problems went on in the past few weeks.

ESS took 3 weeks to deliver the kit to me, originally they promised 2 weeks. The waiting, is like when I waited my delivery of the 330.

The kit arrived 3 weeks ago and without the larger injectors needed because ESS was back ordered. Anyway they said I can install the kit and add the injectors later.

I had certified BMW technician did the installation job. Took more than 8 hours for them to complete it. I think it takes a pretty advanced technicians who know BMW engines well to do a good job. I tried doing it myself but it was too difficult. There's a few cutting of plastics and drilling, and the manual is not detailed at all. Later I sent my ECU to ESS, and waited another 2 weeks until it got back to me (with the injectors). The ECU should be back much earlier (48 hr turnover time and added the transportation, but my parcel got messed up in transportation and got delayed for a week).

I had the injectors replaced and ECU back into my car last Saturday. The car started without a problem at all, and at idle engine is as smooth as before, there is a little whine from supercharger, and the volume increase when you depress the petal. the noise from supercharge is most audible at 2000-3000, above that, it got lost in the noise from engine and outside environment. The whine sounds like interference in radio and very tolerable.

The performance of the car increased a lot, it really pulls at above 3500 and up. And maybe just my mistake but I feel that the exhaust note became louder. I wonder if my step gearbox will last long? (and feel sorry that I cannot get a manual in the place I live)

The increase in acceleration is also very apparent in speed from 50-80mph, if you engage in the right gear.

Overall I feel that the power increase is satisfactory, but certainly not enough at the below 3000 rpm range. I cannot tell the difference between "before and after" performance at that range. Maybe that's because the boost level is low? I plan to add a boost gauge to monitor the boost pressure at all rpm range, but wonder where I can conceal it in the cabin. Anyone know where to get gauge housing as A pillar for the 330 model?

ESS told me that they are developing an aftercooler kit, and will be available at the end of the year or next spring. I think it worths a try. Say that it can increase another 35hp. Also, plan to change my stock exhaust to TSE. I heard lots of positive comments here about it.

Just a short question: Will 330 step handle 400hp at the crank? I think the engine can, according to technician at ESS, but how about transmission?

Appreciate any feedback.

You need a new torque converter quick, before you burn your current one. From wa RMS tell me, throttle response should be instant, and you should feel the gains in the low end. My friend put his boost gauge in his cup holders since he doesn't allow any food or drink in his 330i. seems like a good place to put it. He's at 8 lbs of boost, and beats M3's like nothing, that's with the RMS supercharger, custom dinan intake (had to have it molded around the blower), exhaust, and ECU. He was dynoed at about 290-300whp. Have fun with the Supecharger.

Careful with that a-pillar... although it doesn't look like much, remember that it has the head airbag/curtain behind it.

Forget the A Piller put guages in the console, also just out of curiosity where do you live that you can't get a manual transmission.

I live in Thailand. Traffic here is bad so no offering of manual for expensive cars like BMW. Actually, Thais think manual are for people who can't afford auto............not for me, I am from Taiwan and definitely wants a manual. Hopefully SMG

And yeah, I think i will find some place to put the gauge, not in A pillar.

hey guys, i was just wondering what it is with you BMW guys and supercharging??
why not turbocharging?

also, how much power are you guys making with your ess kits and what stage do you have?

I am interested in the ESS supercharger. Ru sure u can beat M3? If so how many bhp are u getting and what is the torque like in NM?
BTW I am from Malaysia. Does your car have DSC function?

Hi Speed.
I have the supercharger for over 2-3 months now, very satisfied.

I don't think it can beat a M3, especially the automatic version. However, it is very comparable to M3.

I don't have exact figure of power output, but 100+ hp were added on top of the original 222hp. If you get the aftercooler kit, then you will have another increase of roughly 40hp.
Anyway, this car now pulls like crazy. No body beats me on the road except my ownself (i won't allow myself going to fast).
And by the way, here in Thailand, you can buy two 330i and get them supercharged, and still cheaper than an imported M3. I guess it's the same thing there in Malaysia, right?

You won't regret getting an ESS kit, but prepare yourself for the installation. Find someone who is expert in BMW engines. You can let aBMW authorized maintenance shop do the job, but most likely they want to let u sign a paper to free themselves from any breakdown issue, which I think in the warranty won't happen anyway.

you will rock the streets with a supercharged 330i. And don't forget to get an UCC twin silencer.

I can currently keep up with my friend's 6-speed E46 M3. The ESS kit actually gets faster as the software adapts.

I am going to drive it the rest of this week now that I fixed the oil leak. I plan on dyno'n the car this Friday.

Hi Marv,

It is strange, it performs better as time goes by. It seems like there is a break in period for this kit.

Please post your dyno result on the page, I am eager to know the figures.

And i think this is a really worthwhile mod.

The reason it gets better is because the Seimens software adapts the the new fuel/air mixtures and will improve performance over time... just how much time, noone knows, but I am giving it about 500 miles before the dyno.

Todd'
I know it's soon but what MPG are you finding so far?

From what I calculate, I am getting an average of 23.7 MPG... and I keep having to get on it to show everyone... LOL...

Todd, Would it be a good idea to buy an extra DME and keep the original one. I would send the new DME to ESS for programming. In case there is a problem I could just pop my original DME in at any time. BTW Can I use my original DME with the blower while my new DME is being programmed? How much does new DME cost?

I wouldn't dare use a stock DME with the ESS system.

Thanks for your input. Forget about the new DME then.

Supercharged,

I just recently got my 330i here in Thailand. I'm wondering how much did you pay for your ESS supercharger(including import tax...)? Any reason why you picked the ESS system over the mossellmann SC that already avilable from RPM motorsports?... and...save all the hassle of sending stuff back and fourth. Regarding that, who did you have the ESS system installed for you then(Dealer or tuning shop)?

Also, did you have o change the airfilter and muffle to have them sync. with the system? (if so, which?)

Lastly, any problem so faR with the ESS SC?

Thanks for you help man,

I order my ESS kit Nov15 2004.

Kit arrived around christmas minus injectors and pulley.

I sent ECU to then 29 Dec 2004. Still isn't back.

I really am questioning the purchase because the wait times have been too long, plus a car on stands since 29 Dec 2004.

So 2 mionths later and my car is currently on stands.

Install was around 24hrs work, but 3 weeks wait on ECU

ESS also said there were transport delays.

Tracking system said different.

From the tracking system sign dates, the ECU was with ESS for 8 days.

1 day turn around seems a false claim.
