View Full Version : BMW factory alarm
Marvin,
From your DIY section, it seems to me the OEM alarm parts are just add-on (sensors and siren). The brain of the alarm is already factory installed, am i correct here? If yes, without installing the add-on, can i ask the BMW service dept to turn on the rear-view mirror alarm light when i lock the car with the keys?
BTW, thanks for the great info on the DIY section of how to install siren and sensors for the alarm. Waited for 3 months for my custom ordered 325i and am happy to get it last week.
Ken
that's not true. you have to install the "brain" too
but i do beleive that u can get ur dealer to turn on the conr er lgihts and the clown nose when u lokc the car. your car just wont beep. and we all love that infamous beep, dont we

There are three parts to the OEM alarm, the tilt sensor, passenger compartment sensor, and the siren housing. The siren housing contains the "brains" of the alarm system.
You can have the car coded to think it has the alarm installed which will blink the corner lamps and clown nose, but there is no security system.
My clown nose was coded to blink when I took delivery. Immediately after installing the alarm, the car siren started beeping on lock/unlock and would go off if the trunk, doors, or hood was opened. However, the tilt and motion sensor did not work until I went back to BMW and used the MoDiC to re-code the car.
Thanks for the comments, my next question, any good recommendation as to where to order the alarm?

There have been many many posts on where to get parts cheap.
Finally ordered the alarm from eurobuyers.com. $235 shipping included. Now waiting for the alarm to ship to me.

When you get the alarm programmed, you may want to be sure to have the alarm set so that the lock cannot deactivate the alarm. There have been reports on some of the M3 boards of door locks being punched out and the alarm being deactivated via the lock.
I've had mine setup so that the alarm can only be deactivated using the key transmitter.

There is a good DIY to add a DEI shock sensor to the factory setup on Loki's M3 FAQ. The link is http://members.roadfly.com/loki/e46m3_faq.html
The factory alarm is only a tilt / motion sensor. Some M3s have had their wheels taken w/o having the factory alarm going off. Hence the interest in a shock sensor ...
