Transfer Case Replaced

I have a 2001 330XI with <10K on it. I was driving home this weekend from a short trip to town and got a disturbing clunck from under the car followed by a constant whir. Fortunately we were only a few miles from home so we made it back fine. Opened the door to the wonderful scent of transmission fluid.

BMW picked up the car and said they found some "metallic looking" stuff in the transfer case fluid and will send it off to BMW for analysis. They are replacing the transfer case and I should have it back before the weekend.

Not a happy camper!

The Xfer case was replaced and it does feel much smoother. My only complaint is the exhaust has a louder tone and an annoying resonence at 2K rpm. So back it goes.

The dealer did sent a sample of the Xfer fluid to BMW for analysis, but it did not look good. Burnt smell and metallic residue. Something let loose.
