I am on the list with BMWNA to get my steering rack retrofitted with the REAL one. Who knows when that will happen! But from everything I read, it is worth the change.

I've read stuff about the retro-fitting.
What exactly is it? And how do I know if this is available for me? Is it free?

I wrote BMWNA from the Owner's Circle section of the BMWUSA website. They answered me right away saying I was put on the list for the retrofit.
From what I have heard, it is basically the steering rack from the 328. The cost to you should be nothing and should include at least a 2-wheel alignment.

Have you gotten retrofitted yet?
This is in response to reviews that said that the new steering is too mushy, right? I'd like to tighten up the steering in my 2001 330i as well. Any other suggestions?

I have yet to hear back from BMWNA to get my steering rack replaced. I heard it can take up to 5 months...

From what I understand, if your BMW is affected, BMWNA will put you on a list to have the steering rack replaced for no cost. I heard it is not the original rack, but a replacement and is closer to the intended steering from pre 6/2000. It provides stiffer turning and improved feedback.
Try logging on the Owner's Circle at BMWUSA.COM (http://www.bmwusa.com) and drop a line to BMW. They can research your VIN for eligibility and put you on the list. When they actually call you could be a while...

Same as infoe330i. I am now on the list for the retrofit. The steering on my 330i is already great (of course!), but from what I hear from owners of E36's, I can't wait for the retro...

Hey thanks for the info. I E-mailed BMW today. How long did it take to get it done once you were on the list to have it changed?

I was on the list for approximately 5 months and just recently got the retrofit. I love the new feel, but you do feel the road a lot more. Tramlining and bump steering is more prominent, especially if your car is lowered.
Overall, I believe it is a worthwhile exercise.

I'll be picking up my 330i in Munich on August 12 (Euro Delivery). Contacted BMW via BMWUSA.com, got a reply the next day (nice!). Response was that my car will have the "retrofit" rack already installed (i.e. now standard).

Just got call form my dealer to schedule appointent for steering box retrofit. I was surprised. It only took 3 weeks since I first contacted BMW NA for this work.
Will find out in about a couple of weeks how the new feel is.

Are they still doing the retrofit? I didn't know about this but my car is affected. I'm in Canada so I don't know if they do them up here or not either. HELP!!!

I'm not surprised.
I'm looking at a used 330i from 2001 to purchase. I drove it, and as expected the steering feels light. Does anyone know if I would be able to get the retrofit without being the original owner?
What email address should I send inquiries to?
thanks!
